The Australian 75th Anniversary Medal
The qualification to receive this medal was that the recipient was a financial member of the Legion of Frontiersmen or its affiliated units in Australia during the year 1983. This medal was made available in January 1984 on a contribution basis for $40.00. This included the full size and miniature medal with ribbon. The medal was awarded overseas to selected members.
This medal was struck in 1983 to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Legion in Australia in 1907 when the former Commander of the UK Lancashire and Cheshire Command, Commandant J.G. Long Esq. was appointed the Legions' first Commissioner of Australia. The first Legion presence was in 1906, however the first 3 Legion posts were not formed until 1907 and were in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. Commissioner Long was a native born Australian having been born in South Australia in 1875.
It is known that a number of Australian frontiersmen who joined the Legion after 1983 were able to purchase the medal from the National Executive in NSW of the "Australia Area Command" who had the reserve stock. Amor Sanders in Sydney produce the medal. Toye, Kenning & Spencer UK manufacture the ribbon.
This is a round silver medal 38 mm in diameter. On the obverse is a mural style crown in the centre with the words "Frontiersmen" above and "Australia" below the crown, to each side of the crown is the five stars making up the Southern Cross. On the reverse is a laurel wreath within which are the words "The Legion of Frontiersmen of the Commonwealth in Australia 1907 - 1983". The name, number and rank of the recipient are impressed on the rim of the medal.
The ribbon is light green, 33 mm wide, with a white stripe 6 mm wide placed 3 mm from each edge.
