The Legion of Frontiersmen (New Zealand) Command instituted the 'Pioneer Axe" in order to recognize exceptional and exemplary service to the New Zealand Command. The award will be properly known as "The Pioneer Axe", Which is described as a silver metal bushman's plumb axe.

The first of these awards will not be made until after 1 January 2006.7.Subject to these Regulations, the Pioneer Axe is awarded by the Commandant, upon the recommendation of a Unit Commander, to a person, who is a member of the Legion of Frontiersmen (New Zealand) Command and who has rendered a continuous period of not less than twenty years to the New Zealand Command.
