BIOGRAPHICAL
The death is announced at Napier of a well-known veteran of the Maori War, Mr John Patrick Ward. Mr Ward was a New Zealander by birth, and. while only a lad joined Von Tempsky’s Forest Rangers, and fought in many engagements on the West Coast, the Uruwera Country and elsewhere up to 1870. Later, with the late Mr M. O’Donnell (Hawera) he was in charge of Te Whiti and Tohu during their detention in the South Island after they were arrested at Parihaka. Mr Ward wrote a history of the doings of his captives. He was for some time in charge of the Government Tourist House at Lake Waikaremoana. Until his last illness he was an active member of the Auckland branch of the Empire Veterans’ Association and Legion of Frontiersmen. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family of four daughters and one son [3]
