For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his commanding officer was wounded he took command of the battalion until a relief was sent. He then led his company and successfully consolidated the captured objective. He sent a splendid example to his men of determination and courage, which contributed largely to the success achieved.

For conspicuous good work and devotion to duty. Captain VARNHAM is a very capable, painstaking, and efficient Officer, who has excellent qualities of Leadership. By his energy, determination and conduct, he has always been an outstanding example to his men. Captain VARNHAM left New Zealand with the 4th Reinforcements, and saw service in Gallipoli before coming to France.
