For gallantry and devotion to duty on 15th September 1916 at Flers.  This Non Commissioned Officer was with two guns of the 3rd New Zealand Machinegun Company which ran short of ammunition, by arranging to gather ammunition from the dead and wounded he kept his guns in action during a critical period of the fight and materially assisted in holding the captured village of Flers.
