East of Ypres on the 4th October 1917 this NCO displayed the very greatest bravery and the utmost devotion to duty.  He led his Platoon in a most skilful and determined manner, and throughout the advance and during the consolidation of the objective he displayed the greatest contempt for danger, walking up and down the trench under skellfire and organising and conducting the consolidation.  his outstanding courage and great devotion to duty were an extraordinary incentive to his men.
