Major James Edward Hedley Mewett, MC, OBE, enlisted in the Auckland Infantry Battalion 4 January 1915. He served at Gallipoli; was wounded in action in France on 21 February 1917 losing his right hand. 1918-19 he was Company Commander New Zealand Command Depot, Codford, England. He returned to New Zealand aboard SS Ionic 25 October 1919
