For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches.  He led his men with great gallantry,
and himself accounted for three of the enemy.  Later, although seriously wounded, he continued to direct the operations.

Major James Edward Hedley Mewett, MC, OBE, enlisted in the Auckland Infantry Battalion 4 January 1915. He served at Gallipoli; was wounded in action in France on 21 February 1917 losing his right hand. 1918-19 he was Company Commander New Zealand Command Depot, Codford, England.  He returned to New Zealand aboard SS Ionic 25 October 1919
