For conspicuous gallantry in action. He reorganised the line under very heavy fire.  Later, although on three occasions buried by shells, he continued to command his company with great skill and determination.

For gallantry & great coolness at St Eloi on the 15/2/15, in assisting in the rescue of the wounded in daylight from in front of the trenches, whilst under fire all the time.  Three men of this small rescue party were wounded.
