OBITUARY
20972 CLEVELY James William Squire, QSM, Pnr, JP
At the age of 7 years on the 11th September 1993 at Palmerston North Hospital after a three month period of illness.  Jim joined ‘N’ Squadron on 30th May 1933 and has served the Legion well in his sixty years as a member.  Jim was not interested in rank of any kind, preferred to be a Frontiersman, although he was a Corporal in the 1930’s and attended most of the camps that ‘N’ Squadron had and later was advisory Officer to Commandant Dave HONORE when he was in office.  Jim, like all good Frontiersmen, was a volunteer in WW2 and rose to the rank of Sgt Major in the Engineers while serving overseas in the Middle East.  On returning to his old job at the Manawat Electric Power Board as Chief Engineer, he was responsible for the design of the concrete power poles you see today.  Jim was widowed some thirty years ago and is survived by two daughters.  His life was full, a member of the Palmerston North Hospital Board for seventeen years, a hospital in Feilding was named after him, a member of the Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge, a supporter of the St Dominics School for the Deaf, the Fielding RSA as well as many more.  In 1973 he was made a Justice of the Peace and in 1988 received the Queen’s Service Medal for his services to the community.  I have lost a very sincere friend who stood by me over the forty years I have known him.  Some 500 friends and twenty members of the Legion paid their respects to Jim at the St Marks Methodist Church Fielding on Tuesday the 14th September, Rest my friend you have earned your reward with our Lord, Our Commander of all true Frontiersmen.  God Guard Thee, DS FUNNELL.
