BIOGRAPHICAL
Obituary
A highly respected and esteemed citizen of Otorohanga, Mr Harold Welsford CARTER who passed away on the 9th August at the ago of 70 years, was a veteran of two World Wars
Mr CARTER who held the rank of Sergeant in the NZ Rifle Brigade in France during the First World War. On the outbreak of the Second World War, Sergeant CARTER again enlisted. He was not accepted for overseas service but was stationed at Hopu Hopu, where he served for the duration of the war
A member of the Legion of Frontiersmen for 31 years, 29510 Mr CARTER was Sergeant Major of 'O' Squadron for seven years
Mr CARTER was a fine sportsman and a keen follower of all sport. He was a popular member of the Otorohanga Sports Club, the Otorohanga Rugby Football Club and the Pio Pio Football Club, the Otorohanga Gun Club and the Returned Services Association.
While a member of the Gun Club, Mr Carter won many trophies and competed several times at the Gun Club's Championships.
Mr CARTER also played representative football for the Maniopoto and Otorohanga Sub-Union for many years.
On his return from the war, Mr CARTER took up bush felling on contract on the upper reaches of the Waipa River. He was a man of splendid physique and was recognised as an expert bushman. He was a fine axeman and was a popular figure at wood chopping contests.
Mr CARTER was farming at Kio Kio for many years. In later years he was engaged in fencing contracts and always took a great pride in his work.
Bob as he was affectionately known, was blessed with a wonderful nature. He was a good friend and was always ready and willing to help anyone in distress, or any worthy cause
There was a very large and representative gathering at the funeral service, held at the Methodist Church, and the many floral tributes were a silent testimony to the esteem in which the deceased was held
The services at the church and graveside were conducted by the Rev H.M CRAIG and the pall-bearers were Messrs J PETERSON, R CROMBIE, T McCREADY (LOF), and W WILLIS, G MURFIN, and B SHAW (RSA)
