Copy of obituary from THE FRONTIERSMEN December 2003 issue
Alan Sydney Bailey joined "A" Squadron, Legion of Frontiersmen, Auckland in 1988.  He was an active and reliable member at duties in the Auckland area and regularly attended squadron monthly meetings, annual conferences and staff meetings when he was invited to join Headquarters.  Alan took an active part in arranging many of the "A" Squadron social gatherings
In shifting home from Auckland to Waihi Beach, Alan transferred to the Legion Unit which met in Katikati where he took the offices of Segeant-secretary and later the position of Officer Commanding with the rank of Lieutenant
A few years later the then Commandant, Colonel Lennan, invited and then appointed Alan to become the foundation officer of "T" Troop in Paeroa, when that Trop was formed at a Special Meeting which was attended by twenty one people including Colonel Lennan, Maj Snodgrass, Capt Wilson, Frontiersman Cotter who had nominated Alan to become a member, and Frontiersmen Bentley and Lynch of Waihi Troop.  Local dignitaries included the Deputy Mayor, Sergeant Ballintine of the Police, and Mr Tregidga.
As Lieutenant of the newly formed Troop, Alan opened proceedings, and after a prayer by Frontiersman Sorenson, Alan explained the purpose of the gathering.  He had organised the presentation of certificates and several uniform badges to ten foundation members and to the associate members Mr Tregidga and Mr Lynch, by the officers present.
In the latter part of 2001 Alan became the Archives Officer for the Legion in New Zealand, from which he had connections with equivalent Divisions throughout the Commonwealth.
It was at Alan's suggestion that the 90th Anniversary Medal be created.
Alan was a current serving member of "T" Troop until his passing, and one of "A" Squadron's past Officers Commanding made this remark, "Alan has always been a man of sound thoughts and judgment, He was liked by all Frontiersmen"
In the Movements that Alan joined, those who knew him, have lost a wonderful example of service and a great friend.
