1.The Legion of Frontiersmen (New Zealand) Command instituted the 'Pioneer Axe" in order to recognize exceptional and exemplary service to the New Zealand Command. The award will be properly known as "The Pioneer Axe", Which is described as a silver metal bushman's plumb axe.
2.The award will be worn above the edge of the right breast pocket in Legion uniform.
3.The Pioneer Axe can only be awarded within New Zealand.
4.The post nominal 'PNR' may be used by the recipient.
5.Recipients of the Pioneer Axe shall be addressed as "Pioneer" not Frontiersman.
6.The first of these awards will not be made until after 1 January 2006.
7.Subject to these Regulations, the Pioneer Axe is awarded by the Commandant, upon the recommendation of a Unit Commander, to a person, who is a member of the Legion of Frontiersmen (New Zealand) Command and who has rendered a continuous period of not less than twenty five years to the New Zealand Command.
8.The character and conduct of the nominee for the award shall be considered irreproachable and exemplary. No award shall be made to a member who has been convicted of any criminal offence in a civil court or military tribunal, during that time being accumulated for the award.
9.Every recommendation for the award will be properly forwarded to the Commandant, or his authorized representative for action.
10A register of names of awardees shall be maintained by New Zealand Headquarters.
11The Commandant New Zealand Command may, by order under his hand, reinstate, cancel, or annul the award to a member of the Legion of Frontiersmen (New Zealand) Command by recommendation of an Appeals Board, or other such committee empowered to investigate the awardees for the Command.
12Every award cancellation or restoration of the Pioneer Axe shall be notified in Routine Orders.
Up until the end of 2014 there have only been 210 awards of the silver Pioneer Axe made
